Bio

Stephen Michael McDowell (b. 1988) is a multidisciplinary artist living in Hyattsville, Maryland currently focused on digital illustration and sequential art. McDowell is deeply fascinated by science and mysticism. Their work is, accordingly, a meditation on the construction of The Now as a palpable trajectory; a vectored movement away from one vast unknown and toward others. McDowell carves images out of software and mind into collapsed instances of visual memory. By utilizing the bold colors, stark shading, and overall flatness-of-image common to contemporary sequential art, McDowell renders—simply and distinctly—an emotional profile, seeking to cut thru the audience's natural inclination to question if what they see is intended to express timelessness or modernity. Through their illustrations McDowell seeks to continually provoke a sense of playful reverence for—and enable slightly augmented views of—how they and their audience have grown accustomed to interpreting the world, and how the world itself, in time, will change.

What Does Liberation Mean To You?

Liberation means building systems that enable the socially & physically disabled. liberation means dissolving systems built to disproportionately advantage & take advantage. liberation means dance, pleasure, confidence, compassion, & earnestness. liberation means access to accurate information & equitably shared means made 'the norm'. liberation means working & playing & experimenting together. liberation means steady movement toward a version of life where the biggest existential threat is a world we can learn to live with, not people who refuse to learn or leave well-enough alone.
